I Would Have Tried

Anything that I could have done,
whatever would have worked,
I would have tried it all to
bring you back again.

The fight slowly fades away
as the numbness echoes within.
My voice weakens in volume.
I never could have saved you
from the inevitable.

Pushing through the mountains,
hoarse through the deserts:
if God had given me one chance,
I would have you here with me yet again.

Smiling to the outside world,
I put on that fake face.
They don't know I scream in
my closet each and every night:
"JUST COME HOME!"

What did I do, what did I say,
that made this mess?
Could I have helped it?
What could have been different?
Would one change have made things
the way they were supposed to be?

The piano plays sad tones,
and the sun ceases to shine-
but only in my mind.
The world outside is clear and
beautiful and bright.
Oh what an irony.

Now, looking through the pictures,
I let the tears fall again.
I hope your in a better place,
even as I think:
"How to save a life?
How to save MY life?"

I thought of grief when I heard that song. I also read some of the comments (as it was a YouTube video that I was listening to it off of), and felt moved enough to make a poem about mourning.
