The Scarlet Letter

I pick up the worn note,
not knowing that in the pages
is a secret that I never thought
I would discover.

As I read, the past clouds me.
This scarlet letter bounds me yet!
The devil has yet to leave me alone.
He still finds reason to torment my weakened soul.

The screams echo yet again,
and the moon howls long and low.
The blade shines like the night as
dark crimson flows.

Each maroon drop splashes in slow motion;
life giving way to death.
I watch them fall like rain from
these words and this page.

He takes his last breaths,
the deed finally being done.
I shake as I remember his eyes on me.
Was all he could say: "Why?"

I close my eyes and let out an
inward scream of near insanity:
"He deserved it!"
I was the victim, the martyred-
though I still live.

They will never find this note,
this damning confession.
I will burn it like I did his body-
and let it all go to rest.
I originally thought the book, going by the same name, was about a blood-stained note, not a red letter. ^^;

BACKGROUND STORIES (OPTIONAL):

At First...: A woman finds a note, while cleaning out her attic, that is old and dusty. It was from generations ago- and is a confession by an ancestor- from about the mid- to late 1800s- that details how she murdered her husband, and burned his body, due to abuse. The story is played out through a series of flashback-like sequences. The ancestor, in the note, swears she would burn the note right after writing it- but never did.

Then...: A woman finds a letter, while cleaning out her attic, that she wrote as a little girl that details her watching her mother murder her father- and subsequently burning his body to hide the evidence. The mother was abused, though the child- who is now an adult and the finder of the note she wrote- never knew. The memories she tried to suppress over the years come back- and she is haunted with the memories of that tragic night. In order to push back the memories, the woman burns the note, swearing to put the past behind her.

Finally (Official Story)...: A woman, when she was younger, had murdered her husband- and then burned his body. She had been abused by him and had grown tired, and insane, of the mistreatment. In guilt, and release, of what she did, she wrote a letter afterwards detailing the incident. She hid it in her attic in order to keep it, and her wrongs, from being discovered- but has now found it years later while cleaning out some boxes. Horrified, as the memories flood back, she swears she will burn the note in order to put it behind her, and to keep from being discovered. (This version reminds me of the show "SNAPPED"- as well as the song: "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Reba McIntire.)

Very interesting idea, that's much more exciting than what the book was actually about. Ha ha. I did enjoy the actual book though, as well as this. Nice work. :thumbsup:
